Annotated Bibliography Assignments
Due 2-13, 3-13, 4-24
Purpose. The purpose of these assignment is for you to
- develop your research skills
- practice reading sophisticated arguments
- hone your ability to analyze and summarize secondary source material
- help yourself (and potentially your classmates) by contributing to what will become a comprehensive annotated bibliography
Task. You are tasked with
- using available research databases to identify, locate, and access three secondary sources that address the novels covered for each third of the semester. (For instance, for assignment one, you could choose sources related to Oroonoko, Journal of the Plague Year, and/or Pamela.) Each source must be either a peer-reviewed essay or book chapter (i.e., not a note of the sort one might find in Notes & Queries).
- carefully reading and analyzing the arguments being put forth in the sources you select
- creating an MLA formatted annotated bibliography in which, for each source, you offer both a comprehensive summary of the argument and a critical reflection on its potential usefulness to undergraduate students eager to better understand the novel under examination. For each source, then, you should provide two annotative paragraphs.
Criteria. I will be grading these according to
- Thoroughness
- Clarity
- Precision
