ENGL 515: Restoration and Eighteenth Century Drama
Topic Sheet for Final Paper

Requirements:
· 15-18 pages in length (using MLA format—i.e., 12 point font, Times New Roman, double spaced)
· Close attention to one or more of the plays we read this semester
· At least five substantive outside sources (peer-reviewed journal articles and books; primary source research is not only acceptable, but encouraged)
· Due Friday, 12-5; at least two rough pages must be submitted electronically by Saturday evening, 11-29.
Suggested approaches:
1. Trace a particular motif, character-type, problem, or question as it is developed in time by several representative plays
2. Compare the use of setting in two or more plays
3. Investigate the historic circumstances of a particular play’s composition and/or production
4. Analyze particular literary techniques used in one or more plays (patterns of allusion, diction, or imagery, for instance)
5. Examine the play’s connection to/comment on a particular cultural, political, or religious institution or controversy
Rubric:
A: Cleanly written, logically argued, thoroughly supported, carefully organized
B: Falls short on one or more points.
C: Falls short on two or more points.
D: Falls short on three or more points.
F: Falls short on all points.
