Professor E. Derek Taylor
Topic Sheet for Comparison Essay
Due Date: Friday, 4-29-16
Instructions: Compose a comparison and contrast essay (2500 words; roughly 8 pages) that follows logically from the topic provided below. Superior essays will be formatted according to MLA standards and will contain
1. A clearly stated thesis (remember: “Both ___ and ___ wrote about _____” is not a thesis. Come see me if you are unsure why.)
2. Well focused paragraphs, each organized around a thesis-supporting idea
3. Frequent, specific, direct references to the text(s) under examination.
You must incorporate a modicum of substantive research into your comparison—at least three peer-reviewed essays, book chapters, or books.
Topic: Choose one of the following concepts or persons. Then, devise and develop fully a thesis comparing the ways in which two authors we’ve encountered this semester respond to, address, or conceive of the idea or person you’ve selected.
